Wawacan

Wawacan  adalah bentuk karya sastra yang sangat populer pada abad ke-19 sampai awal abad ke-20. Sebelum orang Sunda mengenal bentuk penulisan prosa, hampir semua bentuk tulisan disusun dalam bentuk puisi wawacan dan dangding, yang dikarang menggunakan aturan pupuh. Ada sebuah wawacan yang menurut penelitian Dr.  Mikihiro Moriyama , peneliti kebudayaan  Sunda  dari  Jepang , menjadi tonggak berkembangnya modernitas di kalangan orang Sunda. Wawacan tersebut adalah Wawacan Panji Wulung yang ditulis oleh R.H. Moehamad Moesa, Penghulu  Kabupaten Garut  pada zaman  kolonial . Dalam bukunya Semangat Baru: Kolonialisme, Budaya  Cetak, dan  Kesastraan Sunda  Abad ke-19 (2005), Moriyama menyatakan: "Wawacan Panji Wulung merefleksikan perjuangan penceritanya disertai dengan perkembangan modern dan ikhtiarnya untuk memperkenalkan gagasan-gagasan dan konsep baru kepada para pembacanya.
